THE IMPACT OF INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATION ON THE BEHAVIOR OF COCOA FARMERS IN SEJAHTERA VILLAGE
Abstract
This study aims to examine the impact of international certification—particularly Rainforest Alliance—on the behavior of cocoa farmers in Sejahtera Village, Palolo District, Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi. The main focus is on the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in sustainable cocoa cultivation. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. Respondents included fifty cocoa farmers participating in the certification assistance program and one representative from Rainforest Alliance. The findings reveal that international certification significantly improved farmers’ knowledge, farming skills, and the quality and quantity of their cocoa production. Prior to certification, farmers relied on conventional and non-standardized techniques. After receiving assistance, they adopted sustainable practices, including the use of high-quality seeds, proper fertilization, environmentally friendly pest control, and better financial and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) management. Cocoa production increased by 20–40% after certification. The program’s success was influenced by farmer motivation, institutional support, and access to innovation. Furthermore, the program enhanced farmers’ welfare through the ability to finance their children’s education, meet family health needs, and improve household consumption, while also supporting the sustainability of the local cocoa industry.
